Notes:
The species has been widely misunderstood, and many of the currently accepted specimens were previously misidentified, and numerous specimens wrongly identified as Grewia humblotii. However, the type material is distinctive and is well-matched by some modern specimens. Nevertheless, the material we now associate with this species is quite diverse, some specimens a very a good match for the type, notably the specimens from Atsinanana Region, while specimens from further south (Atsimo-Atsinanana and Anosy Regions) differ somewhat, notably in their indumentg and venation, and these may merit taxonomic recognition. Work is underway to clarify the delimitation of the species.
