general taxon notes:
Rhynchostegium consists of some 128 species in the world with only some 38 species that are better understood (Crosby et al. 2000). In China, P.-C. Chen et al. (1978) reported 15 species, and Redfearn et al. (1996) listed 20 species. Some of these records cannot be verified by this study, such as R. acicula (Broth.) Broth., R. celebicum (Sande Lac.) A. Jaeger, R. confertum (Dicks.) Schimp., R. dasyphyllum Müll. Hal. in Levier, R. herbaceum (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, R. murale (Hedw.) Schimp., R. planiusculum (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, and R. sinense (Broth. & Paris) Broth. Rhynchostegium obsoletinerve Broth. was synonymized with Herzogiella turfacea (Lindb.) Z. Iwats. by Y.-F. Wang and R.-L. Hu (1998). Ten species of Rhynchostegium are treated here.

Plants slender to rather robust. Stems prostrate, more or less irregularly branched. Stem and branch leaves more or less similar, often concave, linear-lanceolate, lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate, broadly ovate, or elliptical, acute, apiculate, shortly to slenderly acuminate; margins entire or serrulate; costae often reaching mid-leaf or beyond, not projecting at tips; median leaf cells elongate-rhomboidal to linear; alar cells differentiated, cells shorter, broader, shortly rectangular or quadrate. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves sheathing at base, slenderly acuminate, curved at apex. Setae reddish, smooth; capsules inclined to horizontal, ovoid to cylindrical, slightly curved, constricted below mouth when dry; opercula conic at base, often long rostrate; peristome double; exostome teeth papillose above, cross-striolate below, trabeculate on ventral surface; endostome segments lanceolate, perforate; basal membrane high; cilia nodulose. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, yellowish green, smooth or papillose.
