General/Distribution: A north temperate genus with c. 250 species. Well represented in Europe and USSR. In Pakistan 7 species are found, some growing at high altitude.

Annual or perennial herbs, often caespitose or with decumbent stems, glabrous or glandular hairy. Leaves subulate, setaceous, linear or ovate, elliptic, obovate or orbicular. Inflorescence a mono or dichasial cyme. Sepals 5, free, 1 (-3) nerved. Petals white, 5, usually entire. Stamens 10. Styles 3. Capsule conical to globose dehiscing by 6 teeth. Seeds reniform to subreniform, smooth, turberculate or papillose.

6 (5) Sepals 6-6.5 mm. Pedicel shorter than the sepals, glabrous. Flowering shoots leafy 7 Arenaria bryophylla
+ Sepals 7-9 mm. Pedicels as long as the sepals, pilose. Flowering shoots with 1-2 pairs of leaves 6 Arenaria festucoides
